 ~ Smocked Christening Gowns~

Classic smocked gowns lend a sweetness like nothing else.  Genuine hand smocking adds a natural elasticity that creates an ease for comfort and fit. It is a time-honored needlework technique that is almost lost today.

Made of lovely fabrics and all with matching caps. Sizes indicated are expected to be in stock and ready to ship.  All gowns are white unless otherwise noted.

Smocked gowns are also shown in our Informal Gowns and Baby Dresses Departments.

Hand smocking is a bit labor intensive and is quickly becoming a lost art form.  Every tiny pleat is picked up with needle and thread row upon row upon row to create a pattern. Designs vary as radically as any other art form - from geometric to beaded to floral and including solid pictures created with individual smocking stitches.

If the pleats below the pleated/smocked section are allowed to release at the bottom they create quite a bit of fullness. This is frequently seen in smocked Christening gowns and dresses - when done this way in a baby suit, it is called a "bubble" rather than a romper. We have all seen photographs of infant Princes Harry and William in this type of baby suit.

Some companies do something quite different and yet they still call it smocking (albeit inappropriately). They gather or rouch fabric in a section and machine embroider over it.  The effect can be charming, but it definitely is NOT smocking.

Smocked garments at The Perfect Pear Children's Boutiques are all hand smocked to very high standards.
