White Dresses - First Communion & Flower Girl Dresses
Discussing the Color "White" for Flower Girl Dresses, First Communion Dresses & Other Special Occasion Dresses

White dresses are the #1 choice for Flower Girl and First Communion dresses.  White looks lovely any time of year on young girls and especially when they are standing up in a Wedding as a Flower Girl, Miniature Bride or Jr. Bride's Maid - and almost always used for First Communion dresses and often for First Communion suits ("Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes" plays in my head while I write this!)

The information here holds true for all special occasion attire including Christening gowns, Christening dresses, girls party dresses - really, it simply applies to fashion!

Of course, white isn't the only choice for many occasions.  Color can be added.  This is discussed in our free Wedding Tips.

More importantly for this discussion - there are many shades of white dresses.  Some shades go better with certain complexions - and some shades definitely do not go together when mixing in a group such as a bridal party.

The first and most important thing to know about white is this - the fabric content will directly affect the color.  This is most important when it comes to silk --

Silk is always off-white.  It does not matter if it is called "dyed white" - it will always be off-white. There are many shades of silk white, but never bright white. Silk white does not blend well with bright white.  The person wearing the silk (off) white will look dingy next to bright white.

How does this apply to YOU?

If you are a Bride, you do not want to mix bright white and silk white in your wedding party. If you are in silk and your flower girls are wearing bright white, YOU will look dingy.  The reverse is true too, of course.

If you are selecting a Christening gown, you do not want to mix silk white with bright white. If you select a silk Christening gown, you do NOT want to select bright white shoes, bonnet or blanket.

People with warm-tone complexions often say they cannot wear white - but it's really a matter of selecting the right shade of white.  Warm complexions often look best in off-white, candlelight (very light cream), ivory or cream (silk can really be your fabric!) while cool tone complexions can usually opt for bright white.

This will affect your selection of just about anything from a bridal gown to a Communion dress to even a turtleneck sweater.  Go with a shade of white that is highly complimentary to your complexion.  If you look your best in brilliant white, understand that you cannot find your color in a silk ensemble - you will have to opt for just about any other fabric but not silk.

"I want satin (or organza or . . .)".  Great!  Just realize that satin can be made of any fiber - polyester, rayon - and yes, silk".

And yes, the non-silk fabrics can be found in all the shades of off-white, ivory and cream imaginable.

Just never mix silk white with other whites. It's pretty much an either-or situation.

If you select a silk wedding gown, never put your wedding party in bright white.  If you select a bright white wedding gown, do not put your wedding party in silk.

Do not use a bright white accessories such as gloves or a headpiece against silk, either. If you select a silk white Communion dress, for example, you will need an off-white or light ivory headpiece, or her dress will look dingy.  This will limit you in your choices, but do not fall into the trap of trying to mix the two together.
